A continual supply of water is needed to replace water lost from the body
in:

* respiration

* urine

* faeces

* sweat

* evaporation from body surfaces such as respiratory surfaces and skin

Water is needed for all metabolic activity, as it is the solvent for waste
products and the medium in which digestive enzymes are carried. Efficient
cell activity depends on maintaining particular concentrations of ions and
waste products of metabolism within the tolerance range for the organism.
Maintaining this balance is called _osmoregulation [1]._
