Marine Organisms

* osmoconformers - for example, most marine invertebrates - have an
internal solute concentration similar to that of the sea. Net water loss
and gain are about equal

* osmoregulators - for example, fish - lose water by exosmosis from the
surface of gills, as the internal solute concentration is less than that of
the sea. There is no control over the loss, so water balance is maintained
by taking in seawater and excreting the excess salts in highly concentrated
urine

* physiological adaptations: some marine organisms can tolerate a high
concentration of solutes and urea in their body tissues
