Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Oxygen consumption in different tissues.
Measuring glucose and oxygen consumption of tissues gives an indication of
their energy needs. For example, the heart muscle of a resting human male
uses 9.7 mL of oxygen per 100g tissue per minute, whereas the liver uses
2.0. With an increase in energy requirements, as in exercise, the rate of
oxygen consumption increases considerably.
