Passage Through Membranes

Membranes have selective control over the movement of materials into and
out of cells.

Lipid-soluble molecules (e.g. chloroform, alcohol) - dissolve in the
phospholipid layer.

Polar molecules and ions - pass through the membrane via protein
channels, which are water-filled pores.

Small uncharged particles (e.g. molecules of O2 and CO2 ) - pass through
the membrane.

Small water-soluble molecules (e.g. urea, water) - pass through pores
between lipid molecules.

Larger water-soluble molecules (e.g. amino acids [1], simple sugars) -
pass through the membrane via protein channels.
