Biology - Survival Mechanisms Introduction

Survival Mechanisms Introduction

Complex organisms survive under changing conditions in their external and
internal environment as a result of the integration and regulation of their
cellular processes.
An animal's [1] ability to detect and respond to such changes, whether
physiologically or behaviourally, affects its ability to survive and
reproduce.

Challenges to survival of organisms by other organisms, such as pathogens
[2] and parasites, [3] are met by a variety of defence strategies. The
human immune system [4]is of particular significance in this context.

It is important to view concepts in terms of survival of the organism to
enable reproduction to ensure survival of the species. In some instances,
the loss of individual organisms may be necessary to enable survival of the
species; e.g. in the hunting and killing of weak prey, the more able
survive.
