Biology - Carl Linnaeus invents binomial names
Carl Linnaeus invents binomial names
The Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus devised the system that is currently
used to name living things in 1753. His system, called the binomial [1]
system, uses Latin. Unlike common names, the meaning of Latin words or
endings do not change with time.
The scientific name of the domestic horse is _Equus caballus._ You will
notice the name is made up of two words. The first word _Equus_ is the name
of the (more on this later) the horse belongs to. It always begins with a
capital letter. The second word _caballus_ is in small letters and refers
to its species name. There are several other species in the genus _Equus
_but only the domestic horse is given the species name _caballus._
