Biology - Nutrition

Nutrition

Nutrition is the process of taking food in and using it. All organisms
need energy to survive. They obtain this energy from the breakdown of
organic [1] compounds such as glucose.

Animals gain organic compounds from their food. Animals are described as
heterotrophic. [2]

Despite popular opinion, plants make all their own food. They absorb many
nutrients [3] from the air and the soil. They do, however, use a process
called photosynthesis to make an important energy-giving molecule called
glucose. Consequently they do not need to absorb it from the environment.
For plants, involves both photosynthesis [4] and absorption of nutrients
from the air and soil. Plants are described as autotrophic. [5]
