El agua insegura y la falta de servicios sanitarios suelen provocar diarrea.
En los países en desarrollo, un niño con diarrea suele morir a causa de la
pérdida de agua y electrolitos.
Para superar esto por medio de la rehidratación intravenosa es una práctica costosa,
que requieren personal capacitado y equipo estéril.
Como alternativa, la rehidratación oral puede implicar dar al niño un
la solución del azúcar y las sales para beber, y es mucho más sencilla y más barata
.
