    Fountain Experiment
The high solubility of ammonia gas in water is demonstrated by fountain experiment. The apparatus set up for this experiment is arranged as shown here.Red litmus solution is taken in the lower round bottomed flask.Ammonia gas is filled in the upper round bottomed flask. The mouth of the flask is covered with the rubber stopper having a jet tube in it.Air is blown into the lower round bottomed flask.Red litmus solution is sucked into the upper flask through the jet tube due to high pressure. At the end of the jet tube the solution changes to blue and comes in the form of a fountain.Ammonia reacts with water and forms ammonium hydroxide and turns red litmus solution blue.
