When you think of makeup artistry, you are likely thinking about elaborate designs such as the one pictured. That is definitely a form of art, however makeup artistry can look natural and be considered art as well. Makeup artistry includes the simple natural look, the night club look, and something more drastic. The skill comes when the makeup artist creates the look that the client is looking for. There will be times when they want to look natural for a photo shoot, look like a runway model, or look extreme. Whatever look they are going for, is what you need to learn how to provide for them. You have to find out what your client wants and find a way to make it happen for them. You need to work with your client’s bone structure, skin tone, and facial shape. That is why it can be difficult to create the looks that you are going for and you need to practice and enhance your skills. “Beauty is often perceived as one of the most pleasant aspects of life,” (Afable, Abigail M., Quiambao, Micaela Marie, Robinos, Kimberly, & Villapana, Raffy Jay C., n.d.). There are many people that take their appearance seriously and spend a lot of time maintaining it. The idea is to change other’s overall perception of them. Self-perceived attractiveness is important and because of that many people have incorporated cosmetics into their lives, to enhance their beauty. Cosmetics have become a mark of womanhood and maturity. Women of all ages partake in the use of cosmetics to enhance their appearance. An older woman tends to wear makeup to capture her youth and a younger woman wears it to give her a confidence boost. Much of our health and mood come from our perception of ourselves. Therefore, when we are wearing makeup, it gives us the confidence that we need to feel great and stay fit. When you feel good about yourself, you are ready to take life on, head first. You tend to say yes to the opportunities you are faced with. It helps you build confidence and allows you to feel secure. You can create this sense for your clients and allow them to feel better about themselves. It is likely that advertisements of celebrities with their perfect complexion started the feelings of inadequacy that leads many people to not be able to leave the house without doing their makeup first. However, the history behind makeup far exceeds modern fashion and television. Makeup has been around since ancient times. It has been a tradition from long ago and it even has some scientific significance. The reason why your clients want to wear makeup may be different, however the goal will likely be the same. They want to enhance their good features and shadow or hide their bad ones. That is where your corrective makeup techniques will come into play the most. You will be able to help your clients mask the things that they really don’t appreciate about their appearance and make it so that they are able to look great and feel good about themselves. Help them get out of their shell, because they won’t have to be afraid that their eyes are too close together or that their nose is too short or too long. Your techniques will fix all of these imperfections. Some studies have looked at the use of makeup as a way to cover up an imperfection. However, this may be something that only applies to part of the women who wear makeup. The idea that the use of makeup can improve overall health and well-being supersedes these desires to just look better. There is nothing that says that these perfect celebrities don’t influence and drive the market forward. But to believe this is the sole push, negates the decades of use prior to our modern day celebs.
