The role of top management is important in every improvement project. If you are going for ISO 9001 - Quality Management System implementation project or with ISO 45001 - Health and Safety management system implementation project, all such international standard require top management commitment for the success of the project. Similarly, a 5S project is also one that requires commitment, support and facilitation from the top management.
 
Therefore 5S gurus exclaim that the leadership should drive the project from the top to bottom and also they need to "Walk the Talk". Sometimes they also have to get involved with workers during Gemba walk. 
 
The word  “Gemba” originates from Japanese and the meaning of the term is “the real place”.
