Necib Ahmed Chaouki Algeria There seems to be much confusion in the practice of behavior-based safety (BBS) that indicates to us, as safety consultants, a need for a common definition. Mathis[i] (2009) says, “The truth is that BBS is a label applied to everything from safety incentive tokens to some very rigid and structured processes. Many of these processes have evolved over the years, and the consultants who designed them have changed their positions about some basic issues.” 2016-04-27 13:04:45

Necib Ahmed Chaouki Algeria Almost every accident, human error is readily cited as a cause of the accident. In the 1930s, Herbert W. Heinrich who did a study as an insurance investigator concluded that 88 percent of workplace accidents occur as a result of traits of character and unsafe practices by workers. Today, with the advancement of technology and design safety knowledge, the failure rate of equipments/facilities has reduce significantly, while human error has emerged clearly as the main cause, accounting for 96 percent of workplace accidents (DuPont Study). Today, organizations’ safety performance has plateau and many have tried various initiatives to increase their performance though having a sound safety and health management system. The answer to this situation is to focus on human’s action which is their behaviour. Behaviour-based safety is an excellent tool for collecting data on the quality of an organization’s safety and health management system. It is a scientific way to understand why people behave the way they do when it comes to safety. It will truly complement safety culture when properly applied. Behaviour-based safety is really by the people, of the people and for the people using positive reinforcement to change or modify unsafe/at-risk behaviour. The behaviour-based system is employee-based driven for continuous improvement. It analyses tasks, hazards, and accidents to identify critical safety behaviours and analyses the identified critical behaviour on job observation and uses feedback about the safety performance as reinforcement to change or modify unsafe/at-risk behaviour or sustain safe behaviour. 2016-04-27 13:04:45

George Pierce United States of America Behavior-Based Safety is a process that creates a safety partnership between management and employees that continually focuses people's attentions and actions on theirs, and others, daily safety behavior it focuses on what people do, analyzes why they do it, and then applies a research-supported intervention strategy to improve what people do. Also To be successful a behavior-based safety program must include all employees, from the CEO to the front line workers including hourly, salary, union employees, contractors and sub-contractors. To achieve changes in behavior, a change in policy, procedures and/or systems most assuredly will also need some change. 2016-04-21 22:04:56
