So you compiled your first resum\u00e9 five or ten years ago. You\u2019ve been updating it from time to time when a job comes up. You\u2019ve managed to get it down to two pages. You think it\u2019s fine…think again!<\/span><\/h1>\n

The majority of resum\u00e9s are simply a list of your past work and educational history\u2026and this can make for pretty boring reading if you consider that the person who\u2019s reading your resum\u00e9 probably has a few hundred to get through.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, assuming that you have the basics of a neat, coherent, succinct and well-written (and correctly spelt) one-page resum\u00e9, but are still having problems getting called to interview, here is <\/span>Alison<\/span><\/a>\u2019s guide to making your resum\u00e9 stand out from the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Be a Winning Salesperson<\/span><\/h2>\n

You\u2019re essentially <\/span>marketing yourself through your resum\u00e9<\/span><\/a>, and offering a list of your past experiences doesn\u2019t even come near to showcasing what an amazing team worker you are, or what a creative problem-solver you are, or how your passion and determination inspire everyone on your team. So tell them! In a few lines, at the top of the resum\u00e9, sell yourself. Be honest and truthful, but remember you want them to sit up and take notice of you. Spend time on this; it\u2019s the most important three lines in your resum\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n

They want to know what you can do for the company, what you can bring and how you will fit in.<\/span><\/p>\n

Focus on the Employer\u2019s Needs<\/span><\/h2>\n

Your potential employers don\u2019t care how getting this job will make you happy \u2013 not yet, anyway. They want to know what you can do for the company, what you can bring and how you will fit in. Address the employers\u2019 needs and let them know what you can do for them. Include this in the first few lines as above.<\/span><\/p>\n

Include other Achievements & Skills in your R\u00e9sum\u00e9<\/span><\/h2>\n

So you won an award \u2013 \u00a0put that in your resum\u00e9. If you\u2019ve been taking the initiative to further your education and interests through continued learning, mention that as well. <\/span>Continued learning<\/span><\/a> shows initiative, a curiosity about the world around you and a drive to constantly improve and upskill yourself \u2013 things every employer is looking for in an employee. So mention any courses you\u2019ve undertaken online and otherwise. Also, be sure to mention any <\/span>soft skills<\/span><\/a> you have, as they are transferable to just about any position.<\/span><\/p>\n

Knowing <\/span>more than one language<\/span><\/a> is a big advantage in today\u2019s global market. So if you have them, list them in your resum\u00e9!<\/span><\/p>\n

Volunteering shows community spirit and an interest in the greater good.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hobbies in a\u00a0<\/span>Resum\u00e9 <\/span>\u2013 Forget it!<\/span><\/h2>\n

Just don\u2019t go there. The fact that you go out <\/span>running<\/span><\/a> on a Saturday morning is great for you, but will it have any bearing on your job? The only extracurricular activities you should include are those that benefit others. So, if you like to spend your Saturday morning down at the soup kitchen, share that. Volunteering shows <\/span>community<\/span><\/a> spirit and an interest in the greater good, which translates well in a business environment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember that your resum\u00e9 is an advert about you. You don\u2019t want to over-embellish and over-promise, but you do want potential employers to know how great you really are.
