The stressors may be work-related, family <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issues, illness, financial worries, and in the past two years, growing anxiety around the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus pandemic. These stresses look different for everyone and are experienced at <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different levels. Some can deal and work through these issues, but for others, they are a <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">challenge. At their peak, these can affect the productivity of a workforce and for others, this <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be a precursor for mental health issues and distresses.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health conversations are often shrouded in shame, stigma, secrecy, and a lot of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">misinformation. Despite all the efforts made to educate society on the realities and challenges of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health, it remains a taboo. In the workplace, it\u2019s an even bigger challenge because of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scepticism towards those who have mental health issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What are mental health disorders?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many types of mental health disorders and each manifests differently. Some of these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety, and autism. There are more than 10 types of mental disorders and can affect daily living and others can be long-lasting. These conditions affect your thinking, behaviour, mood, and feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Who is at risk for mental disorders?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental illnesses do not discriminate, and anyone can develop a mental health disorder. However, there are certain conditions that can increase one\u2019s predisposition to developing a mental illness. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><b> (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIMH) in America estimates that 21% of all U.S adults suffer some form of a mental illness, females at a higher risk than males. These conditions were most prevalent in young adults compared to the 26-49 year and older age groups. Those at higher risk to develop a mental illness are identified by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genetics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discrimination and social\/racial injustices<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and drug user<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stressful life events including negative life experiences and traumas<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial problems<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Myth vs Fact<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is fact? What is the impact of mental health on the workforce? As more research and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investment is made into mental health, we\u2019ll outline and bust five mental health myths in order to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create a more informed, open, inclusive and empathic work environment for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Myth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Individuals with mental health challenges cannot hold down a job or do it effectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mental health symptoms manifest different depending on the individual and the exact <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nature of the condition. While it\u2019s true it can affect one\u2019s ability to work, it could also not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have any effect or negative impact at all. If they are high-functioning individuals, they can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">function in their day-to-day lives without a drop in their productivity or work attendance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite their internal struggles.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b>Myth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Talking about my mental health issues at work will affect my growth at work.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Individuals with mental health conditions can work. When the condition is managed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and its treatment plan is followed, they can work as well as any other employee.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b>Myth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Mental health cannot be improved in the workplace.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Employee wellness plays a big role in the health and productivity of employees. By <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating a caring company culture and offering a safe, support system to employees can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">result in positive outcomes. Organisations can hold information sessions, direct employees <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to treatment centres and not ostracise struggling employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b>Myth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Struggling with mental health issues means you are weak.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Fact:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), depression is the most common <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental disorder globally, affecting more 260 million people. This is not a sign of weakness, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nor is it an indicator of a lack of willpower. Anyone can develop a mental health condition <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because factors like genetics, chemical imbalances and social stressors can contribute to its <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">development.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myth<strong>:<\/strong> Individuals with mental health conditions are violent and can be dangerous.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Fact<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Despite the portrayal in the media of those struggling with mental health as being violent, this is rarely true. This is misinformation which perpetuates the stigmas around mental h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ealth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Responses to mental health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Psychiatric Association Foundation developed a \u201cNotice. Talk. Act.\u201d approach for the workplace that can help staff understand and learn about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alison.com\/course\/diploma-in-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Notice: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If HR or any colleague notices a behavioural or performance changes in a co-worker which can be indicative of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alison.com\/course\/mental-health-studies-understanding-behaviour-burnout-and-depression-revised\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burnout and depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They can approach them privately to find out if something is wrong.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Talk. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speak privately with the struggling employee and show your care and concern for their challenge. Talk to them without judgement but with care, an open mind and a desire to know and understand things from their point of view. When people feel heard in a safe space, they are encouraged to be more open to hear advice and receive help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Act.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make available employee assistance programs for staff and encourage those struggling to get help and direct them where they can get help and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.alison.com\/4-simple-steps-improve-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve their mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organisations can implement employee wellness initiatives that cater both the physical and mental health wellbeing of their employees.
