Bacteria can be programmed to make many copies or clones of 'foreign DNA'.


* The required piece of DNA is inserted into bacterial plasmids

* The bacteria are cultured, reproduce rapidly by binary fission, the
plasmids carrying the desired DNA also multiplying

* The DNA can be extracted for use in analysis.
