Probes
* The membrane or blotter is immersed in a bath to which probes (known
sequences of DNA) are added. The probes are labelled or tagged with
radio-active or fluorescent markers so they can be located.
* As the mixture cools, the single stranded DNA probes (or RNA probes
which can be used) pair with complementary strands of the target DNA, a
process called hybridisation. Complementary strands of DNA may pair with
each other too.
