Biology - Inheritance of autosomal recessive characteristics
Inheritance of autosomal recessive characteristics
The recessive characteristic will only be apparent in the individual if he
or she is homozygous for the allele of that trait. For example,
* An affected individual can have two unaffected parents (both will be
heterozygous for that trait)
* If the two parents show the characteristic (both must be homozygous)
then all the children will also show the characteristic
* Males and females are equally likely to show the characteristic (not
X-linked).
Examples of genetic disorders [4] following the autosomal recessive [5]
pattern of inheritance include:
* Phenylketoneuria
* absence of growth hormone
* cystic fibrosis
* albinism.
