Biology - Significance of meiosis
Significance of meiosis
Why does meiosis result in increased variation in offspring?
* Haploid [1] gametes [2] are formed so that when fertilisation takes
place there is no doubling up of chromosomes; the diploid [3] number is
restored.
* Increased variation [4] in offspring; different combinations of alleles
[5] are possible because of crossing over [6] during which parts of
chromosome pairs can be exchanged and recombine.
* Random assortment (segregation) [7] of chromosomes occurs.
