Karyotyping
The karyotype of normal human chromosomes

Karyotyping is a technique that enables a cell's chromosomes to be
examined. It can only be done while the cells are dividing (why?). Cells
are extracted from the organism, cultured, stained, photographed and
examined so that matched pairs can be lined up. Any obvious abnormality in
number, shape or size can be identified. For example, Down syndrome results
from 3 number 21 chromosomes; individuals with Turner's syndrome have 22
pairs of autosomes [1] but 1 X and no Y chromosome.
