Biology - Origin of modern humans
Origin of modern humans
Two main theories are put forward to account for the origins of modern
humans:
OUT OF AFRICA
MULTIREGIONAL
Modern humans originate about 2000 000 ya in one location
modern populations are traced back to about 1 mya when humans first left
Africa.
Modern humans spread out of Africa replacing other groups
modern humans emerged slowly throughout the world, different populations
maintaining contact and enabling some gene flow. Slight anatomical
differences were able to develop in response to local selective pressures.
Mitochondrial DNA (only passed on in females' eggs) can be traced back
to a single female ancestor
supporters say mitochondrial DNA data could be interpreted to support
this model.
