Gene manipulation involves the application of a number of techniques
variously known as genetic engineering, gene technology or recombinant DNA
[1] technology. The impact of this technology is enormous as we have the
ability to change the very nature of living organisms, including humans, by
manipulating their DNA. The 'species barrier', that is, the normal
constraints on genes moving from one species to another, that operate in
the natural environment [2], have been overcome.
Gene technology depends on the application of a variety of techniques to
enable the manipulation of DNA.
