Biology - Gene expression
Gene expression
Genes [1] have to be switched on to take effect (be expressed) or remain
switched off. Not all genes in the cell of an organism are active. Where a
cell is in the organism, and what stage it is in development, determines
which genes are activated. This enables differentiation or specialisation
of cells and tissues to occur. DNA [2] is present in the mitochondria and
chloroplasts of eukaryotic cells, and regulates their activity.
Watch the gene expression video. As well as gene expression the video
introduces subjects such as protein synethesis which will be covered in
more detail in later sections. Use the video to familarise yourself with
these processes.
