* data: information collected - measured or counted
* variable: a factor under investigation; a dependent variable is one
which depends on another - the independent variable, for example, the
uptake of CO2 (dependent variable) in photosynthesis depends on light
intensity (independent variable)
* axes: lines along which data will be plotted; vertical axis is X axis
on which dependent variable is plotted; horizontal axis is the Y axis on
which the independent variable is plotted
* continuous data: data obtained by taking measurements, always have
units, for example, oC, mm, beats per minute
* discrete data: data obtained by counting individual items rather than
by taking measurements, for example, number of kangaroos in 10 km 2
* categories: separate groups into which individuals are sorted, for
example, number of males in a given population, blood group types in a
population
* class size intervals: similar to categories but individuals are put in
groups according to, for example, size - 1-5mm, 6-10mm etc.
