Biology - Chromosomes and Coding Instructions

Chromosomes and Coding Instructions

How well do you know the structure of a chromosome?

Chromosomes [1] only become visible through a microscope just prior to
cell division. Before they are able to be seen, the DNA [2] has been
duplicated (replicated) and coils tightly around proteins called histones.
The two strands of DNA so formed are called chromatids [3] and are still
joined by a protein disk at a point called the centromere.

Chromosomes are distinguished by their length, shape, position of
centromere and banding. An easy way to determine the number of chromosomes
in a cell is to count the number of centromeres. The number of centromeres
will equal the number of chromosomes.
