The University of Texas at Austin is a public research university and the flagship institution of the University of Texas. Founded in 1883, it is one of America's 'Public Ivy' schools and a major centre for academic research. As well as housing the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library, UT Austin has produced numerous Nobel Prize winners, several Pulitzer Prize winners and a number of Fields medalists (for mathematics), among other achievements.

The university is also home to the Center for Open Educational Resources & Language Learning (COERLL), one of several National Foreign Language Resource Centers (LRCs) funded by the US Department of Education. The mission of these federally-funded centers is to improve the teaching and learning of foreign languages by producing high-quality resources, in the forms of both learning materials and teaching practices.

In combination with its commitment to the teaching of foreign languages, University of Texas at Austin also believes in the importance of technology transfer and its possibility for social good. Applying this to its research and teaching, the university is proud to make important pieces of its language curriculum available for free through Alison.
