Learn typing the right way!

The approach of this typing course encompasses a full system of training based on how your hand works, and the kinds of movements and sequences of key hits needed to train the movement of each finger. In this typing course, we do not follow only the more traditional methods used by other tutors, which teach typing based on keyboard layout (home row touch typing). Rather, a detailed discussion and explanation of how each finger works and the differences in finger control is provided. The typing lessons and training modules are based on these facts about skill differences in different fingers. Although the focus is on developmental training of finger skill, exercises which train home row and specific rows on the keyboard are provided as part of the training modules.

All aspects of typing are taken into account in the training, testing, and tutorials:

• the mechanical aspects of hand and finger movement;
• physical motor learning and training that needs to take place;
• motivational aspects and interest in wanting to learn efficient typing;
• ergonomics and correct positioning and movement as a basis on which to develop good typing skills;
• the need for demonstration and animated movement to show correct fingering in letter sequences;
• rote letter and word sequences as well as high-interest and fun passages to type;
• training modules with visual representation of typing speed and high scores to beat.

Training modules consist of lists of exercises with hierarchical training methods, starting at the most fundamental individual finger training exercises on a regular ‘qwerty’ keyboard.

These training exercises provide simple to more complex exercises to train finger placement and movement, with demonstration and timing, for all keys on a qwerty keyboard. Scores and timing are recorded for each exercise.
